"Lucy Taylor's The Safety of Unknown Cities is one of the most impressive
debut novels
centered around relationship-driven fiction catalyzed by horrific
events mostly realistic, sometimes supernatural. The Safety of Unknown Cities is very much
a supernatural horror novel. Indeed it's sexual, it's graphically written, but it's
also
an affecting and powerful novel about heartbreak and the untimely destruction of
childhood. If reading the book strikes familiar chords, the resonance's might be with
either Clive Barker for an unflinching approach to highly
charged subject matter, or with Poppy Z. Brite for sheer
candor...an adventurous novel of a quality that absolutely demands an audience."
WARNING: Reading this book may turn you into a rabid Lucy Taylor fan.
That's certainly what happened to me! Dave's been telling me about Ms. Taylor for quite
some time now, and in deference to him, I purchased The Flesh Artist at the World Horror
Convention in March. I am pleased to report that the six stories in this collection are
all excellent. Taylor has a brisk, clean, deceptively simple style that pulls you in and
forces you to confront the horrors she creates. My two favorites were "Wall of
Words", with an ending worthy of the legendary Robert Bloch, and "Midwife,"
a great argument (are you listening guys?) for staying out of the delivery room. If, as
Norman Partridge says in his introduction, Lucy Taylor is "just getting warmed
up," I can't wait to see what the future holds.
